Is Compounded Semaglutide Right for Me?

Dr. Sydne Ford-Norton • Mar 02, 2024

We know, we know! Semaglutide is ALL the rage right now. From social media, to celebrities, to your friend's and family members. You've likely heard of semaglutide from some source by now and may be wondering if you should start it.

What are these hot new weight loss medications anyway?

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are GLP-1 receptor agonists that were originally used to treat type 2 diabetes and were found to have additional benefits for weight management. GLP-1 agonists stimulate insulin release, reduce glucagon secretion, and slow gastric emptying to help control blood sugar levels.

Pros:

  • Improved blood sugar control.
  • Potential for weight loss and decreased cravings
  • Cardiovascular benefits in some cases.

Cons:

  • Injectable administration, which can be a drawback for some.
  • Gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and diarrhea.
  • Cost may be higher compared to some other weight loss medications.
  •                Black box warning of increased risk of thyroid cancer.
  • Long-term safety and effects are still being studied.

So, is compounded semaglutide right for YOU? Can you get this medication from Spark Performance and Wellness?

As a board-certified physician, my commitment to the oath "first, do no harm" guides my practice.

While I prescribe various weight loss medications like Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide), it is important to clarify that I neither endorse nor prescribe compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide. These patented compounds are exclusive to their manufacturers, making medications from compounding pharmacies unverifiable and unreviewed by the FDA.

Recent statements from the American Board of Obesity Medicine and the Obesity Medicine Association caution against compounded GLP-1 agonists, emphasizing the need to avoid them. This raises crucial considerations regarding safety, efficacy, quality, purity and adherence to established standards.

Recognizing the financial burden associated with GLP-1 agonists, it's understandable that individuals may seek compounded alternatives because it is more cost effective. However, it's crucial to note that compounded medications might be less potent, potentially resulting in slower weight loss or even dilution concerns based on the source.

While cost is a valid consideration, it's essential to explore various effective weight loss medications available on the market. Additionally, addressing foundational aspects such as gut health, sleep optimization, stress reduction, and personalized movement plans are integral parts of my approach to weight management.
